Wedding Photography in Cork City and County

One of my favourite locations for wedding photography is Cork – and by Cork I mean both the city and the county.

The best wedding photography not only focuses on the bride and groom (of course!) and the guests, but also conveys the setting. If you take the trouble to organize your wedding in Cork, you probably don’t want the photographs to suggest that it took place up in Donegal … or nowhere.

You can’t hold your wedding again – or at least you can’t hold the same wedding again! So you want your wedding photographer to capture everything that gives it its unique atmosphere and mood.

In my work, I combine creative flair with what’s called reportage wedding photography or documentary wedding photography. In simple terms, it’s about telling the story of the wedding as richly as possible. And that means giving a flavor of the location, since it’s an essential part of your story.

So, what about Cork city? It’s compact and easy to get around, and there are some beautiful spots for wedding photography in the lively city centre, along the River Lee and in the public parks. It’s a city in which its river flows through it twice, so there are lots of bridges!

Shandon Tower with its eight bells, St Fin Barre’s Cathedral with its three spires, Cork City Hall or the main quadrangle at University College Cork make great backdrops. Or there’s the bustle and colour of the English Market, which Rick Stein described as “the best covered market in the UK and Ireland”.

Like the voices of the citizens, the streets in some parts go up and down. For those with the necessary energy, a walk up steep Patrick’s Hill leads to great views back down over the city, or there’s Montenotte, where the city’s merchant princes built their mansions, from which you can look down over the port.

There are some great backgrounds, too, around Cork Harbour, which is one of the largest natural harbours in the world, and Blackrock Castle is a familiar landmark.

Wedding photography in Cork county

As for Cork county, it’s hard to know where to begin. The coast of Cork is packed with one beautiful location after another, from Youghal and the wonderful ports of Cobh and Kinsale all the way through West Cork and the borders with Kerry. And there’s a string of colourful towns and villages along the way: Skibbereen, Schull, Ballydehob, Castletownshend, Ballycotton, Glandore, etc (can’t name them all). And of course Blarney Castle and Gougane Barra are also favourite spots for wedding photographs, though I wouldn’t recommend that the bride try to kiss the Blarney Stone when there’s a strong wind blowing.

Sea vistas, beaches, coves, harbours, mountains, rivers, lakes, cliffs, colourful villages and lots of those little surprise features and magic corners mean that it’s easy to find the perfect backdrop for wedding photographers. Needless to say, that doesn’t mean you’ll end up with the perfect wedding photos – unless you choose the best photographer available (just contact me and I’ll point you in the right direction).

If great locations help to make good photos, then Cork city and county won’t fall short. (And, years later, when you can’t stand the sight of each other any longer, you’ll still have some great photos of Cork city and West Cork to enjoy looking at!)

But you needn’t worry if you’re getting married in one of those hard-to-find parts of Cork where the surroundings are plain. A good photographer has the practised eye and the art needed to compose a good background.

So, if you’re planning your wedding and are lucky enough to live in Cork, just get in touch and I’ll be down like a shot.
