GROOM! – HOW TO LOOK YOUR BEST ON YOUR WEDDING DAY

There are several key elements to consider when choosing the right wedding suit for you.

Thank You, Louis Copeland, for help with that piece of advice

There are several key elements to consider when choosing the right wedding suit for you.

Whatever the dress code of your wedding — whether it be black-tie, formal or smart-casual — every man wants to look his best on his big day. After all, if you look good, you’ll feel good, too. And let’s not forget the importance of the wedding photos, – you’ll want to make sure you’re looking picture-perfect in every shot.

DECIPHERING THE DRESS CODE

The dress code is the obvious starting point.

BLACK-TIE

The least complicated of all dress codes, black-tie leaves little room for error or confusion. It simply involves a dinner jacket (aka tuxedo), white shirt, bow-tie and, if you’re a stickler for tradition, some patent leather shoes. Executed correctly, a black-tie will make any man look and feel a million dollars.

While it may be called black-tie, your outfit doesn’t necessarily have to be black; you can opt for a dark navy or charcoal without flouting convention. And if you’re feeling particularly dapper, you might like to consider a double-breasted jacket, maybe even in velvet, rather than wool.

Look to accessories to add a personal touch – a silk pocket square, for instance, could be used to inject a pop of pattern or colour, while some classy, understated cufflinks will surely but softly underline your style credentials.

FORMAL

The popularity of the formal suit for weddings needs a little explaining. Unlike black-tie, which has limited opportunities for future wear, a well-chosen suit can take you anywhere, long after you exchange vows.

With so much variety to choose from, selecting a wedding suit can, of course, be daunting. But it needn’t be, the Louis Copeland team have a wealth of experience to help guide you.

Arguably the most important decision when it comes to a wedding suit is whether you wear a double- or single-breasted jacket. It’s a purely personal choice and both styles have their pros and cons. A single-breasted suit will certainly have greater potential for post-wedding use.

A double-breasted suit in dark grey or midnight blue will make a subtle but powerful statement, showing a touch of panache – and bags of confidence. It also wraps the torso in a distinctive formality that you rarely get with single-breasted.

TWO OR THREE PIECE

Another consideration is whether to go with a two- or three-piece suit. The popularity of the latter has soared in recent years. And while it will certainly have you looking the business on your wedding day, the real beauty of the three-piece suit lies in its post-wedding versatility. When you separate the waistcoat, the jacket and trousers become a conventional work suit and the waistcoat something new that can be incorporated into the season’s newest casual ensembles.

Once you have settled on your suit style, you’ll then need to turn your attention to the colour. If your nuptials are taking place in the height of summer or in some far-flung destination, you might like to pay with colour and opt for something a little less conventional; but for most weddings, a grey or navy suit will always be flattering, irrespective of your shape or size.

As a general rule of thumb, grey (from stone to charcoal) and mid to deep shades of blue are the most suitable colours for a wedding. And, better still, they will work well year-round. Summer weddings do provide some scope for diversification as the brighter, warmer weather means that that paler fabrics can look very smart.

Whatever your suit colour, it will invariably work best with an ultra-crisp, plain shirt – ideally white, but that’s not set in stone — which lends a classic look that can’t fail to complement the wearer.

If you want to add some verve and personality, look to accessories such as the tie or pocket square, which can introduce an element of colour and/or pattern.

WEDDING LOCATION

Different locations and seasons call for different dress codes, so factor in where and when the nuptials will be taking place when it comes to selecting your wedding outfit so that it will be most appropriate.

While a wedding in Vegas, for example, would likely involve a more relaxed, possibly tie-free dress code, a traditional church service tends to involve a similarly traditional outfit.

The date of the wedding should also be taken into account when shortlisting outfit options. While a linen suit is perfectly season-appropriate during the warmer months, it’s not the ideal for a December wedding.

Look, instead, to heavier materials such as wool, cashmere or tweed. A high-quality wool suit will provide ample insulation and has the added advantage of wearing well over time, making it a smart investment.

THE IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD FIT

We cannot over-state the importance of a good fit. And if there’s ever an occasion to give due consideration to how a suit fits, it’s your wedding day.

Whether it’s formal, casual or anything in-between, the correct fit makes all the difference. Our instore tailors will make any adjustments necessary to ensure your suit is the optimum fit. Remember: even the highest quality clothing will not look well if the fit is not perfect.

A ready-to-wear suit can, of course, be tweaked and tailored to your personal requirements, resulting in an excellent fit. However, opting for a made-to-measure design, which is cut to the individual’s precise measurements and specifications is often a very popular choice for Weddings.

The made-to-measure process is a fantastic experience for every man and what better occasion than your own wedding day? In addition to ensuring an unrivalled fit and comfort, made-to-measure also gives you the option for a tremendous degree of personalisation: you can select everything from the suit fabric to the jacket lining, and can choose from a variety of lapel and pocket styles, allowing for a wholly personal outfit. You can even have a monogram of your wedding date or something important to you, stitched inside the jacket to add a unique finishing touch.

The made-to-measure process is surprisingly simple & enjoyable. One of our specialists will guide you through the whole process, taking into account everything from your frame and size to your skin tone and the theme and location of the wedding. Just bear in mind that the process takes up to six weeks from start to finish, so it’s best to plan ahead.

CARING FOR YOUR WEDDING SUIT

It’s important to care for your suits in order to ensure their longevity.

Hanging your suit will help it maintain its form, but it’s important to use the right hanger. What you’re looking for is a top-notch wooden hanger with rounded edges and a wide-spread contoured shape, which will ensure your suit is in pristine condition come the big day. Be sure to give your suit the breathing space that it deserves in your wardrobe.

A suit bag – which is complimentary with every Louis Copeland suit – is the perfect way to transport your suit to and from the wedding venue, and will protect it from damage. You might like to use a suit brush on the day of the wedding (or even the night before), to remove dust particles, fluff and loose hairs.

There’s nothing like being prepared for unseen eventualities. And that’s why we’d always recommend popping a spare pare of cufflinks into your suit bag and even, a spare shirt. The wedding day is a long day and after the many hugs from well-wishers your shirt can be left with make-up stains, so taking the opportunity to change your shirt will keep you feeling fresh and looking great for your photos, trust us it’s a game-changer.
